UCSC Supports Second Harvest Food Bank
UCSC volunteers and financial supporters have been proud to serve in cooperation with Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz for over two decades!The Holiday Food & Fund Drive team continues to grow its annual donation effort making UCSC one of the top contributors to the drive. All of this is done with volunteer work and the private donations of our community members. We are proud to support Second Harvest of Santa Cruz and to give back the community that supports us.
Second Harvest Food Bank supports UCSC and the Santa Cruz Community
The Second Harvest Food Bank, founded in 1972, was the first food bank in California and is the second oldest in the nation. Here are some highlights of SHFB's history:- 1972 The first pounds of food are distributed from old Santa Cruz County Hospital parking lot.
- 1979 The National Second Harvest Network is established. SHFB is one of the 13 founding board members.
- 1989 SHFB serves record numbers of people in relief efforts due to the devastating Loma Prieta earthquake.
- 2008 SHFB breaks previous records while giving assistance during the 2008 economic downturn.
- 2020 Again, SHFB breaks all previous records while giving assistance during COVID Shelter-In-Place Orders and CZU Lightning Complex fires.
- Santa Cruz residents receiving food each month increased from 55,000 to over 100,000.
- Food distribution pounds/month increased from 650,000 to 1,200,000 million.
